COSMETIC SURGERY PROCEDURES ON THE RISE

Lipo
River Medical, the leading, Irish cosmetic surgery provider has reported a 25% increase in demand for cosmetic surgery procedures in January 2015 compared to the same period last year.

The most popular procedure continues to be Breast Augmentation surgery, accounting for 40% of the overall cosmetic surgery market in Ireland. The second and third most popular surgeries are liposuction and abdominoplasty (aka tummy tuck) respectively.

At River Medical, the majority of breast augmentation patients are in their early 30s and go from an A cup to just a C cup.

Aisling-Cleary
Registered General Nurse, at River Medical, Aisling Cleary commented:

“Gone are the days of overtly large breasts. Today’s patient requests more volume, a more feminine shape and most importantly of all, natural looking results. We really do see patients from all walks of life, all ages and backgrounds”

“There’s a lot less stigma attached to cosmetic surgery. Previously there was a “tell nobody” attitude as well as a feeling that it was reserved for only the very wealthy or “rich and famous”. We find that in more recent years, women have become more open and share their experience with close friends and family; so much so that 30% of our business comes from referrals”.

An increase in size isn’t the only reason choosing to undergo breast surgery. While the majority of breast surgery procedures carried out in Ireland are breast augmentation procedures, an increasing number of women are choosing to undergo breast reduction, breast uplift and breast asymmetry procedures.

Excessively large breasts can cause an inordinate level of pain and discomfort and really negatively affect confidence and self esteem. This is where a reduction can really positively benefit someone’s day to day life. Also, child birth, however wonderful can cause a great deal of stress on the body, as can weight loss and the natural pull of gravity, which can all cause volume loss, sagging and prematurely aged breasts. In these cases, a breast uplift can help achieve fuller, more natural and perkier looking breasts.

Perhaps one of the greatest benefits of breast surgery is to correct “asymmetry” ie breasts that differ in size.

Leading breast expert and Consultant Plastic Surgeon at River Medical Dr Labros Chatzis commented:

“Whilst no two breasts are identical in shape and size, in fact less than 10% of women have identical breasts and these are usually A/AA size; for some women these differences can be so pronounced that it impacts heavily on their body image and can seriously affect their self-esteem”.

Before progressing with surgery, it is vital to ask yourself some important questions about the provider you choose. Is the Surgeon a Consultant Plastic Surgeon? Is he/she registered in Ireland and a full time resident? Will my surgery be carried out in a fully accredited Private General Hospital and will I stay over night? These are just a few examples. When it comes to your health, cutting corners is never best practice.
