Liposuction is a common procedure used to remove unwanted fat in targeted areas of the body. The abdomen (upper and lower), male chest, flanks (love handles), buttocks, thighs (outer and inner), arms and knees can also be successfully targeted. It is particularly effective for people who have stubborn areas of fat that have not responded to diet and exercise alone. These stubborn deposits of fat are generally found in the deepest layer of the skin and liposuction is one of the only procedures that can target and remove this fat effectively. Liposuction not only removes excess fat but it also improves the shape of the body and texture of the skin by smoothing out bulges and bumps.-

A key aspect of preparing for any surgery is that your Surgeon understands your desires and expectations. At your initial consultation, your Consultant will explain the liposuction procedure in great detail; discuss your expectations and what he/she can achieve for you. It is important for you to be fully informed and to have realistic expectations of the results.
Your Surgeon will also want to evaluate your current physical health and health history, ensuring you are a suitable candidate for surgery. Because this is an elective procedure, you and your Surgeon will naturally carefully discuss the benefits and risks involved, as is the case with any surgical procedure.-

During the liposuction procedure, your Consultant will make a tiny incision, usually only 1-2 cm in length at the most appropriate site to be able access and remove the targeted fat. He/she will also take into account the position of the incision site to minimise any visible scarring. The procedure is usually performed under general anaesthetic and takes between one and two hours. All River Medical surgical procedures involve an overnight hospital stay to allow us to closely monitor your recovery and ensure optimum safety. After all, a hospital environment is the safest and only adequate place to deal with any potential eventualities.-

Typically you will stay overnight in hospital after your procedure. You will need someone to take you home when you are discharged by the Surgeon as you will not be able to drive. You may have bruising or swelling around the areas that were treated. Your Surgeon will tell you more about the typical recovery process and may make recommendations based on your individual case but by and large expect to take between 5-10 days off work. If your job is physical you may require more time. Everyone recovers differently but you can rest assured that we will monitor you closely to ensure the swiftest, safest and most comfortable recovery.-

Your Questions Answered

  • What can I expect to pay?+-

Price should not be a deciding factor with an elective surgery like liposuction. Trust, experience and aftercare are absolutely key, and River Medical is widely recognised as the industry leader in Ireland. We are also proud to say that we adhere to the strictest of ethical guidelines and believe that only highly trained medical staff should advise on cosmetic procedures, be it surgical or non-surgical.

  • Who will I meet at my initial consultation?+-

You will meet with one of our Consultant Plastic Surgeons who will discuss everything with you including your expectations and desires, the procedure and the best type of procedure for you, the results as well as any possible eventualities.

  • What is the recovery time like?+-

You will need to take 5 to 10 days off after your surgery. If your job is physical you may require more time. Everyone recovers differently and the River Medical team will monitor you closely. You will have an element of discomfort after your surgery which typically lasts 1- 10 days but this will be managed with the support of your Consultant Plastic Surgeon and River Medical Registered General Nurse. We encourage patients to get back to their normal life as soon as it feels comfortable for them. We feel that this really promotes and aids a speedy and successful recovery. Everyone recovers differently but you can rest assured that we will monitor you closely to ensure the swiftest, safest and most comfortable recovery.

  • Am I a suitable candidate?+-

Your Consultant will assess your suitability and recommend the best treatment for you at your free consultation. It is important to note that liposuction isn’t a weight loss solution. It targets stubborn areas or bulges of fat that cannot be eliminated through diet and exercise alone. The treatment could also be referred to as a form of body sculpting.

  • How should I prepare for my procedure?+-

Preparation will begin with an initial consultation with your Consultant Plastic Surgeon, followed by a meeting with one of our Registered General Nurses. Each one will go through every aspect of the surgery in great detail. Prior to surgery you will return for a further comprehensive pre-operative assessment with your River Medical Nurse. Your Consultant will be available to you right up until your surgery should you wish to see him/her again.

  • Where will my surgery be carried out?+-

Your surgery should ONLY be carried out in a Private General Hospital that is fully accredited. A hospital environment is the safest and only adequate place to deal with any potential eventualities.

  • What sort of aftercare will I receive?+-

At River Medical, you will receive FREE and unlimited aftercare post surgery.

  • Will there be scarring?+-

Only a tiny incision of between 1-2 cm in length is required. Your Surgeon will also take into account the position of the incision site, ensuring it’s minimally visible. In addition, our Plastic Surgeons use very fine specialist stitching which minimizes scarring. He/she will discuss the incision site/s and exactly what you can expect post procedure at your initial consultation. He/she will also show you actual photographs of similar incision sites that he/she has carried out on other patients.

  • Why choose River Medical?+-

We are widely regarded as being the industry leader in cosmetic surgery. At River Medical, we never compromise on the level of care and attention we give each and every one of our patients, every time, and we are committed to you from procedure right through to your 24/7, lifelong aftercare.

  • Why do you not have before and after pictures on your website?+-

Before and after pictures on websites can be misleading as they may not be patients of the surgeon who will be carrying out your surgery. As every person has completely different expectations and different treatment requirements, it is a much more valuable tool for your Consultant Plastic Surgeon to show you pictures of surgeries that he/she has carried out and discuss similar cases to your own, as well as the results that he/she can achieve for you and your body.

  • Is there a non-surgical alternative?+-

At River Medical, we will always endeavour to provide patients with the best possible solution. With this in mind if there is a non-surgical alternative, this will be discussed with you by your Consultant Plastic Surgeon. There is a non-invasive fat removal treatment called Coolsculpt which can be discussed should you be deemed a suitable candidate.

Testimonials

I was a little nervous but excited at the same time but everybody made me feel so at ease. Everything went super-smoothly and I am so pleased with the results. I am still a little swollen yet people have been commenting on my weight loss! I haven’t shared my secret! I can't exercise very much as I have M.E. so this has been a god send to me. No more congratulations on being pregnant when I am not. Many thanks to all at River Medical.
