GET THE FACTS ABOUT ANTI-WRINKLE INJECTIONS

DID YOU KNOW….

One of the most common misconceptions around anti-wrinkle injections is a fear or looking frozen with very little movement or expression, or worse still looking “done”. Times have most certainly changed and moved on drastically from this trend, favored by many celebrities back in the 90s and early noughties.

To achieve that subtle, younger and fresher appearance (think more well-slept than wind tunnel) it really comes down to the skill and expertise of your practitioner.

At River Medical, our Consultant Plastic Surgeon carries out anti-wrinkle injection treatments and our Nurses carry out and administer dermal filler (and a whole host of other anti-ageing and expert skin treatments). But just what is the difference between the two?

We address some of the most frequently asked questions we get on a regular basis each day!

The Facts

Anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers are an extremely popular and successful method of treating lines and wrinkles and deliver a fresher, more youthful appearance. Generally filler is used on the lower part of the face and anti-wrinkle injections on the upper part (lines on the forehead, crow’s feet).

How do fillers work?

Dermal fillers involve an injection of a gel-like product to physically fill and plump out the line or area of concern. The product acts as a scaffold under the skin, providing structure and stimulating your own natural collagen to grow. Ultimately the body absorbs the product and leaves behind the natural collagen for long-lasting results.

Areas treated:

  • Laughter lines (nasalabial folds)

  • Loss of volume in the lips

  • Loss of volume in the cheeks

  • Lines & wrinkles around the jaw line

How do anti-wrinkle injections work?

Anti-wrinkle injections work by blocking the nerves that contract the muscles, thereby softening the appearance of the line or wrinkle. The skin above the muscles becomes nice and smooth after a period of between three to 14 days. It takes this time for the product to settle, attached itself to the nerve endings and get to work.

Does it hurt?

In the case of filler, a local anaesthetic cream is applied to the area an hour before your treatment and so the treatment is considered relatively painless by the majority of patients. You will feel a little twinge or sting but generally this is the extent of the sensation. In the case of anti-wrinkle injections, a tiny needle is used so you only feel a little twinge.

How long does it take?

With filler, the treatment length varies depending on the number of areas being treated but generally it takes between 30 and 90 minutes. Anti-wrinkle injections take just a few moments!

How soon will I see results?

Filler results are immediate however it will take up to two weeks for the product to settle into the carefully selected area and for the full effects to be visible. Anti-wrinkle injections take between 3 – 14 days to take effect.

How long will the results last?

Filler results last between 3 months and 18 months depending on your own body’s metabolic system and the product that is used. Anti-wrinkle injections last up to 6 months.

Is there any downtime?

There is a possibility of some bruising, swelling and redness but these typically subside 24 to 28 hours.
